Maidstone Borough Council is encouraging everyone to support the government’s ‘Shop Local Week’ this week and head along to their local shops, restaurants, cafes and pubs to support local businesses.

Shop Local Week runs until 16 August as part of the government’s Enjoy Summer Safely campaign, encouraging people to get back to the way of life they have missed, while following safety guidelines.

Cllr Martin Cox, Leader of Maidstone Borough Council said: “The past few months have seen local businesses suffer incredibly so we whole heartedly support this campaign to get people out shopping, buying locally and socialising safely. Our local shops are the backbone of our communities, from local bakers and butchers, gift shops and newsagents to cafés and restaurants, we urge everyone to support them if they can and aid our national recovery across the country.”

John Foster, Head of Economic Development at Maidstone Borough Council added: “Shopping local pumps money into the local economy, creates jobs and boosts local communities. To make sure shoppers are safe businesses have brought in a wide range of measures, such as plastic partitions at tills and hand sanitiser stations, to protect customers.

“There are some good deals to be had at the moment too, not forgetting the Eat Out to Help Out discount scheme provided by the government, saving diners up to £10 per head on eat-in meals on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays in participating businesses.”
